Why Am I Doing This?

Hi, I am Sejal (21, as I write this article), and this is my first piece on my website. So far, I haven’t planned to post this anywhere else other than on my website, and I’ll probably take a week to complete it from the day I start writing. But if I see any traction on this, it will most likely come directly, as I’m not too worried about SEO/AEO practices, or from sharing it with people I want to read it, which, if I do, will mostly be people from work.

Quick note about me before I tell you why I am doing this, I am a full-time marketer at TeamOhana (now). And unlike a lot of people, I don’t necessarily hate working. In fact, I take immense pride in my work (I plan to write something about this one day, too, about why I take pride in my work or how I ended up being proud of it). But the point is, I do marketing at startups.

When I am not doing that, I watch a lot of stand-up artists (I am probably the only person you will ever talk to who can be nerdy about stand-up comedy). Earlier, I used to watch a lot of movies and shows, so I can still talk to you about them. I still watch them once in a while if there’s a strong recommendation. I watched Detachment starring Adrien Brody yesterday, and it was so true to what it was trying to be (which was to be a very sad film). I always try to have one sci-fi show running in the background of my life.

Finally, I am also a book reader. Not obsessed, but I do it to become better with words, and I’ve kind of started liking it, too. Today, I am not stuck to any single genre of books, as I read all kinds: self-help, productivity, rom-com, poems, fiction, etc. I really enjoy Japanese books that do what non-fiction books are supposed to do while being fiction. I consider myself pretty lucky to have a lot of friends I can (and try to) meet every weekend. To me, this is easily one of the perks of living back in your hometown. Unlike other people I know who move cities to study or work, they miss out on that. They still end up making friends, of course, but I don’t have to worry much about that.

Sorry, that went on for a while, but I plan to cover all of those topics individually later, and more as I keep building new things to follow in my life. But for now, let me answer: Why am I doing this?

I have always believed, and told people, that my curiosity and impatience towards taking action have taken me to places nobody goes this early in their life. Now, I mean meetings, conferences, events, meet-ups, 1:1s, etc. When you meet so many people in life, you find different interests and personalities among them, but there will surely be commonalities, too. Among those people, somehow, one thing that stands out is how well they articulate their thoughts with clarity. So much so that I come back and look them up online. Trust me, you will be intrigued, too.

Pausing that story for a second. Meet Dave. He’s THE MAN in marketing. You can definitely look him up online, as he’s done a good job marketing himself. And no doubt, I look up to him for lessons (I haven’t met him, by the way. I only reach him through his newsletters). One thing he says is to write as much as one can. I agree with him, and I take his advice.

Now, let’s go back to story 1. How do you articulate better? How do you talk better? How do you become someone people go back and look up online? Not just by being a marketer. You can be intrigued by anyone in your industry. One thing you will notice is the articulation of their thoughts. There are many more qualities, too, but this will be the case 9/10 times.

You can’t take up courses online or offline to learn how to converse better. They’re simply not effective. So how do you do that? You write. You write to become a better thinker. You write to find solutions. You write to come up with ideas. You write because Dave asked you to. You write because everyone is using AI, and very soon, there will be only similar-sounding content (of course, there will be exceptions), but I am talking about the major chunk of people. So, I will write.

Now, I don’t know how much, how often, or about what, but everything will be and can be figured out. I have some interesting formats in my head that I plan to try, and I have a few topics planned, at least for now. So, I hope to be consistent for some time, and as much as I can.

Until next time, with another post.
